Why I'm Joining MATES Big Lap
Friday 13th Feb
Hi, I’m Latia!
I am a Training and Employment Coordinator (TEC) at Golden West Apprenticeships. I have been on the frontline working with business owners and apprentices for the last 3 years.
As a TEC, I’m lucky to walk alongside our apprentices through their highs and their lows.
We get to celebrate their wins — new skills, new jobs, new confidence — but we also see the moments when they’re struggling, overwhelmed, or unsure where to turn.
That’s why MATES Connector training has been so important for me.
It’s given me the knowledge, confidence, and tools to support apprentices who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts or going through something heavy. I don’t just hope I’m saying the right thing — I know how to listen, how to respond, and how to connect them to real help.
Every conversation matters.
Every apprentice matters.
And this is why I’m proud to support MATES and the work they do every single day.
A MATES rearch report (2020) found that:
• 1 in 4 apprentices are bullied
• Almost 1 in 3 have had suicidal thoughts
• Many feel like they can’t speak up
That’s not good enough.
So I’m choosing to walk, run and ride for the Big Lap to raise funds for MATES in Construction, who provide on‑site support, suicide prevention training, and someone to talk to when things feel too heavy.
If you can donate or share, it would mean the world — and it directly supports workers who need it most. 🙏
